Toronto Maple Leafs have many players that could be traded

Assuming (I know...) that sanity prevails in Leafland and management goes younger at the trade deadline, ideally we would add young NHLers, top prospects and draft picks for some of the following players:

Tomas Kaberle (IF he wants to go to a Cup contender)

Mike Komisarek

J-S Giguere and/or Jonas Gustavsson

Brett Lebda

Francois Beauchemin

Fredrik Sjostrom

Are you getting the picture? Essentially, the goaltending and the defence have to get as young as the forwards, and the whole group will then need to get faster, stronger and more skilled, as a unit, growing together. As this is realistically a three to five year project, there should be a moratorium on trading any picks in the first three rounds for years 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Let's take the pain now, and not repeat past mistakes.

Lineup for 2011 New Orleans Jazz and Music Heritage Festival

Headliners for the 2011 New Orleans Jazz & Music Heritage Festival have been announced and they include the enigmatic Lauryn Hill, plus star performers John Legend & The Roots, Kid Rock, The Strokes, Arcade Fire, Willie Nelson, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Jimmy Buffett and Robert Plant.

The seven-day music festival livens up New Orleans for two consecutive weekends, April 29 to May 1st and May 5 to 8th. Also scheduled to appear are Lupe Fiasco and NOLA native Mystikal. This year will feature a celebration of Haitian culture with artists from Haiti including Wyclef Jean, Boukman Eksperyans and Tabou Combo. The Haitian fete is the largest Haitian cultural event to take place in the United States since the earthquake destroyed much of the country in 2010.

Tickets for the New Orleans Jazz Fest went on sale January 20th, 2011.

This gal's eyes never left the teleprompter as she blazed through a litany of fear and complaints (coining the new word "fewggestions" in a Forrest Gump moment of comedic inspiration), tag-teaming with Ryan's high road to try and hold the gutter for the Republicans.

God help America...

Brent shines, MacArthur battles in Leafs losing effort

Though Burke has vowed to "add" before the trade deadline, it's becoming increasingly apparent that it may be wiser for the Leafs to subtract, at least with regards to age. Already one of the youngest teams in the league, the right move now will be to go even younger, and NOT trade away any draft picks for the next four or five years.

A week ago I was nervous about The Monster starting a game, whereas now, if the Maple Leafs can find good value for Giguere from a Cup contender, I'd be happy to see Gustavsson be given a chance to play half the remaining games, with Reimer getting the other half.

Among the bright lights tonight was Tim Brent, who scored two goals and added a sweet assist. Clarke MacArthur may have earned himself a new contract when he pummeled Carolina's Chad LaRose; check out the vid below.

Okay, let me leave myself one out...

If the Leafs win in Florida tomorrow night, we'll put one foot back on the bandwagon, and see if it can lead to any momentum after the NHL All Star Game. As I wrote the other day, the Buds needed to win twelve of their next fifteen or sixteen. Winning six of their next seven might put them right back in the race, and if Santa Claus wears a blue suit this year, there'll be some rare punk and blues LPs under my tree.

Leafs call up Reimer, may play tonight or tomorrow

Although the spec is that Jiggy plays this evening and James Reimer gets the start tomorrow night in Florida, do not be surprised if the tables turn. This weather cannot be ideal for Giguere's tender groin, so if there is any soreness, look for JR between the pipes this evening, providing J-S Giguere with another day's rest before the Florida start.

My readers will know I was very happy with this decision, as I had called for Reimer to be brought back up to the Leafs last week. The only reason The Monster would get another start soon would be if we had a first round pick and didn't care about winning the remaining games. Going with Giguere and Reimer shows the Leafs are still trying to win, and Gustavsson's trip to the Marlies next week could provide the minutes, the sharpness and the confidence needed to return him to the ranks of bona fide NHL goalies.

If Goose plays well on the farm, Burkie may get trade offers for both Jiggy and The Monster...

Komisarek innocent until proven otherwise; Leafs respond to TMZ report

The celebrity gossip website TMZ's article on an alleged complaint to LA Police about Mike Komisarek says the woman alleges he punched her in the face after she slapped him on the dance floor. According to TMZ, whose Komisarek story was picked up by Huffington Post, the woman claims he held her in the air on the dance floor and then she demanded to be put down, When he didn't comply, she says she slapped him, after which she says he hit her, causing her to bleed. She also alleges Komisarek left the club, so she called the Los Angeles Police.

It will be interesting to see the full timeline of the story, as civil suits are often the real motive behind a criminal complaint. If we never hear much about this story again, I'd say that means a private settlement regarding an over-exaggerated nightclub encounter.

Let's focus on hockey for now, and if the story gains enough momentum to be a distraction, we will revisit it. Otherwise, the goal is to string together some victories for a playoff run, while showcasing Jiggy for a potential Stanley Cup team that needs a bona fide number one or an ultra-reliable backup.

If the Maple Leafs can win a dozen of their next fifteen or sixteen games, that will indicate the young core is strong and worth adding to, for this year and next year. On the other hand, if they struggle and return to inconsistency or worse, serious offers for the likes of Giguere, Beauchemin and Komisarek will have to be entertained, with the goal of being stronger over the next three to five years.

Reimer deserves extended NHL opportunity

Clearly it wasn't just one bad game, or Leafs fans wouldn't have had such an ominous feeling when we heard Goose was getting the start at Madison Square Gardens. If we're going to stick with these young guys and develop them into a contender, the Toronto Maple Leafs have to become a meritocracy.

James Reimer has earned the opportunity to play more NHL games, while Jonas Gustavsson clearly needs to get his confidence and game back. Gustavsson to Marlies, Reimer to Leafs; It's really that simple!

Loughner killed 6, plus Palin's political hopes

On Sunday I predicted that Sarah Palin would either rise to new heights of leadership within the next few days, or crash and burn and be gone from the political scene forever. Based on her ignorant and ultimately offensive (blood libel... sad reference) response to the tragedy, it appears that Huckabee has already passed her as the Republican's leading candidate for 2012. She will fall further from grace.

In a TV interview a high school friend of Loughner's mentioned that he was deeply influenced by the film Zeitgeist. According to Wikipedia, here is the central premise of the movie:

Zeitgeist: The Movie is a 2007 documentary film by Peter Joseph. It asserts a number of conspiracy theory-based ideas, including the Christ myth theory, alternative theories for the parties responsible for the September 11th attacks and that bankers manipulate the international monetary system and the media in order to consolidate power.

Reimer wins big for Wilson; Leafs rolling on the road

It's been a coupla late nights but they've both been worth it. Last night I witnessed James Reimer providing solid NHL goaltending while backstopping the 600th career victory for Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson. Reimer stopped 36 shots while Clarke MacArthur scored two goals; Kessel and Gunnarsson rounded out the scoring.

There are four Leafs with winning records this year:

Colby Armstrong
James Reimer
Darryl Boyce
Joey Crabb

Have I left anyone out? The return of Armstrong and the promotion from the Marlies of the diligent trio of Reimer, Crabb and Boyce, has created a new chemistry on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 6-5 shootout victory game against the St. Louis Blues on January 6th (I was very lucky to be at that game!) marked a resurgence in the Leafs offence, and combined with the 9-3 win the next night in Atlanta, moved the Leafs to the top of the class for 2011.

A statistician out there may want to look this up, however I believe the Maple Leafs are leading the league in 2011 for:

Wins
Goals For
Penalty Killing

If they are not at the top, they are very close in all 3 of those categories. Well done, Burkie and Wilson!

Loughner and Manson each symptomatic of their age

Jared Lee Loughner: 21st Century Schizoid Man

While I have never understood why Charlie Manson remains such a fascination to people, I did read Helter Skelter back in the day and can verify that Manson's particular form of lunacy can be tightly tied to the cultural ethos of the late 1960s milieu (Beatles, drugs, sex, freedom +++). The fact that he took his "visions" to irrational and ultimately violent conclusions did not negate the value of the culture, it just proved without a doubt that Manson was a seriously ill, deranged man.

Many have already tried to distance Jared Loughner from the right-wing American gun culture that spawned him, but everyone who has looked at his "work" knows that is just ass-covering bullshit. This knee-jerk reaction is to be expected, for in this tragedy the ideas of this seriously mentally ill young man did not fully originate in his own head, and are often re-phrasings of typical militia propaganda. To quote from Loughner:

No! I won’t pay debt with a currency that’s not backed by gold and silver!

This is a juvenile, incorrect argument wonderfully lampooned in recent weeks via Stephen Colbert's pitch for his TV viewers to invest in "bananas" through "Yellowline", a clear jab at the right wing pitchmen for the gold gougers (eg selling overpriced coins and trinkets to bullied common folk). There are ZERO currencies based on gold and silver on our planet. Currencies are based on trust, on the collective responsibility of the people and banks of that nation, including a fair analysis of the intellectual and material wealth of the country or region (Euro).

He was rejected by the military, and based on his dismissive attitude toward fellow students at Pima College, it is certainly possible that he may have been turned down by universities. His delusions are aimless circles however they raise up the Constitution so often it feels like an echo chamber with the sound of an elephant in the room.

It's difficult to argue with anarchists (I'm a Utopian Anarchist, however that's a whole other ball of evolutionary wax), who believe that no government is even better than small government.

WAKE UP! AMERICANS; WAKE UP!!!!

Other countries are way beyond this. It's not about bigger or smaller government, but rather efficient, honest government. We Canadians are America's best friends and we can teach you a lot about guns (don't worship them...) and about health care (demand one payer, State-wide solutions).

The Pima County Sheriff's Office has now interviewed the "person of interest" sought in the tragic Arizona mass murders, and have ruled him out as a suspect or accomplice in the assassination attempt / mass homicide. He is a cab diver who drove Jared Lee Loughner to the scene of the crime, unaware of what was about to unfold.

Based on the inchorent ramblings of Jared Lee Loughner, it is becoming increasingly evident that Jared is a mentally ill lone wolf.

Time for Sarah Palin to Think Again

Republican RoboBabe Sarah Palin has shown all the signs she wants to run against Barack Obama in 2012, however she has yet to show the political maturity required of a valid candidate. Quitting her Alaska Governership to pursue celebrity dollars was not a good sign, and though I believe Obama will trounce her in any event, I think it is important that the Republicans offer a genuine candidate.

Palin is in the crosshairs of the American Public right now, for being a prime instigator of gun worship and embracing the most vitriolic of radio commentators. He has now been interviewed and released and is no longer considered a suspect in the Tucson Arizona mass killings yesterday. He is a taxi driver who drove Jared Loughner to the scene, though he did not know of Loughner's intentions.

Reports now indicate that six people (including a 9 year old girl) have died and fourteen (including Representative Gabrielle Giffords) have been injured in today's mass homicide shooting in Tucson, Arizona.

Well, one of the big stories on Yahoo today is the scientific finding that smelling women's tears reduces testosterone levels in men. Though this is being positioned as a "turn off", it could be just a survival mechanism, meaning if this gal is crying, then there may be other issues to deal with right now, with higher priority than sex / procreation.

The story got me thinking, what smells DO turn men on? I know what I love, however, let's see what Joe Public thinks about this:

Grabovski's shootout goal versus Blues; Beauty, Eh?

As I hadn't been down to a Toronto Maple Leafs game at the ACC for about five years, it was a true treat to get to go last night with my son Dave. The Leafs scored 15 seconds into the game (Colby Armstrong, assisted by Kris Versteeg and PEI's Darryl Boyce!), then fell behind 2-1 by the end of the first period.

In the second period the Buds came out strong, and went into the dressing room with a 4-2 lead. Early in the 3rd Phil Kessel scored his second of the evening to make it 5-2, and it seemed clear sailing from there.

But wait, shades of Russiamanaia for the second night in a row? The Blues came storming back with not 1, not 2, but 3 big goals to tie the game at 5-5 and almost win it in regulation and overtime. Which brings us to the shootout goal that was worth the price of admission.

Some of you kids in Leafs Nation may remember Mikhail Grabovski's "Spinorama" goal from last year, where he finished with a backhand, and the goalie in this video may have been expecting just that. In any case, this is one of the most impressive shootout goals you will ever see:

Toronto Maple Leafs vs St. Louis Blues

I haven't been to the ACC for a Leafs game in about five years, so tonight's game against the St. Louis Blues should be a blast. Five or six years ago I was working for Portfolios.com (now CreativeShake.com) when Dan Tanenbaum owned it, and the gentleman was kind enough to give me a pair of Platinum seats every year at Christmas, for several years. As my dad had often taken me to Leafs games at Maple Leaf Gardens (he had mid-level Greens season tickets, right on the blueline) when I was a child, it was a huge pleasure to return the favour and sit with him in those awesome Tanenbaum seats!

My son David won tonight's seats (3rd row in the balcony) at his company Christmas party, and as he was kind enough to invite moi to join him, so the Father-Son hockey tradition lives on!

Russia deserves World Junior Hockey Gold Medal

This post would have been entirely different had Canada's 3-0 2nd period lead held up until the end (for example, how can Russia's skinny teenagers compete with strong North Americans?), however my hat is off to the Russkies for what was one of the greatest comebacks in international hockey ever.

Rallying for five straight goals in the 3rd period, the Russian hockey players were hungrier than the Canadians, who had out-muscled, out-skated and outplayed the Russians for two dominant periods.

Congratulations to the Russian hockey players, their coach and all involved for what will surely be the greatest hockey victory of their lives for many of these lads.

As for Canada, our medal streak is still alive and winning silver two years in a row puts pressure on next year's crew to win Gold in Edmonton in 2012; Go CANADA Go!

Siren Symbol: Starbucks logo progression timeline

I received an email this afternoon from Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz (okay, me and several million others received it), advising us that the Siren Lady in the Starbucks logo is about to become front and center in 2011, the 40th Anniversary of Starbucks.

Here's how the logo has looked over the years, and how it will be re-branded this year:



It doesn't matter to me which logo they use, as long as the coffee is strong and tasty, however I do believe the new one is more beautiful and less corporate than the previous renditions, so, way to go Howie!!!

Canada-Russia Gold medal game a hockey purist's dream

I realize that most North American hockey fanatics were hoping for a Canada-USA Gold Medal game, but not moi. As I was 14 during the 1972 8-game series between Canada and the Soviet Union, and have enjoyed many Canada-Russia matchups (who can forget the 3-3 tie on New year's Eve 1975, between the Montreal Canadiens and the Soviet Red Army team, video below) since then, Wednesday evening's World Junior Hockey Championship is hugely anticipated.

The original hockey powers are Canada and then Russia, and though the Americans are now the 2nd best hockey country, the sport and its trophies don't mean as much to the USA people as they do to Canadians and Russians, two hockey-mad crazy peoples!
